Unusually in an industry that commonly views increased utilization and multi-tasking as benchmarks of efficiency and profitability, a group of friends set up Swiss company HeliAlps and eschew that reasoning to concentrate on a single small and demanding market segment.

In 1995, a close associate was fatally injured when the rescue strop he was wearing separated from the hook of a rescue hoist. The ensuing investigation revealed a well-known but little talked-about condition at the time known as ‘dynamic rollout’. The result of that investigation saw the introduction of a new rescue hook to the Australian military that is now widely used throughout the Australian industry. The question remains though, has the hard lesson been learned throughout the world’s industry?
