Building upon a banner year, continued market success for best-selling A320 Family, new A320neo
January 2012 - Newsletter
As Airbus logged a record commercial performance in 2011, the Airbus.com corporate website continued to be the leading online resource for all company activities – providing news updates, the latest photos and videos, dedicated event coverage and much more throughout the year. Our online offerings will increase in 2012 as we keep pace with the diverse range of Airbus activities around the world.
Following a record-breaking commercial performance last year, Airbus will continue its industry leadership in 2012 with further production increases for the A320, A330 and A380 families, as well as an expansion of the employee count. This outlook was provided by Airbus executives at the company's traditional New Year-opening press conference on 17 January in Hamburg, Germany – where President and CEO Tom Enders also outlined Airbus' 2011 commercial results. During the 12-month period, Airbus logged a total of 1,608 commercial gross orders (representing 56 per cent of the global market share by value), resulting in 1,419 net orders (54 per cent of market share by value) when cancellations were taken into account.
Airbus marked a significant production milestone earlier this month with handover of the 5,000th A320 Family aircraft, which was received by Lebanese flag carrier Middle East Airlines. Delivery of the jetliner – which bears a distinctive 5,000 serial number reference on the fuselage – comes as overall output for the A320 product line rises to 40 aircraft per month during the first quarter of 2012. This activity follows an outstanding commercial performance in 2011 for Airbus' single-aisle jetliner family – led by the 1,226 bookings received for its eco-efficient A320neo (new engine option), which brought overall A320 Family sales to 8,292 aircraft as of 31 December 2011.
Low-cost carrier Norwegian has signed a memorandum of understanding for 100 eco-efficient A320neo aircraft, reinforcing this A320 Family new engine option's position as the fastest-selling commercial jetliner series ever.
The 2012 Singapore Airshow will feature an active presence from Airbus, as the company underscores its traditionally strong market presence across the Asia/Pacific region. This biennial event will be held 14-19 February at Singapore's Changi Exhibition Centre. Airbus' on-going commitment to eco-efficient air transportation also will be front-and-centre with the company's participation in the event's Green Pavilion – which showcases the aviation community's latest initiatives and technologies for improved environmental performance. Check back on airbus.com from February 14thto follow the event.
